Hello, my dear friends!

Long time no see!

That's because of my job which already got me. It takes almost all of my time giving almost nothing in return (sure, except some silly small and colorful papers which we need for livelihood). To the end of the day I'm too tired to make something worth to upload to DA. So, right now I have no time for new designs.

But, now, right to the point!

My time as a Community Volunteer for the Skins & Themes Gallery will expire very soon. To say fairly, it has already expired few months ago, he-he.

So, I would like to introduce the new Community Volunteer for the Skins & Themes Gallery!

Maybe I'm too late with my journal post and you already know about this changes, but anyway, I would like to inform you that two great teams - #communityrelations and #MN-Volunteers have joined! Now we are one team!

Did I miss something? Who knows where have gone the "thumb codes" for submissions? I mean those :some-numbers-here: codes which you could copy/paste from submission's page to your journal as a preview image of the deviation. How now we can feature the deviations in our journals?

Aliens

Take a look at the photos below. ~Astroadamo's gallery is full of such macro-shots of the insects and some of them look really fantastic. Never thought that insects may look so cool. I even placed one of the photos on my desktop as a wallpaper (the one which has a DD). They look like aliens! Maybe they are aliens? Visit ~Astroadamo's gallery and take a look at them yourself.

WSC-2011 - World Screenshot Championship

This is the desktop screenshot contest that will be hosted by the #DitchDefault group.

The champion will be determined in tournament style, so there will be different rounds in which the contestants will have to battle against each other to get to the next round and all comes down to one great and spectacular finale with a lot of nice prizes!

Call for Help - Skins & Themes

"Did you know that every category on deviantART has an ID number associated with it?

Did you know that category #1 - the very first one created on deviantART - is Skins & Themes? Maybe that isn't surprising considering our roots! However, did you also know that there are over 250 sub-categories within Skins & Themes???

Skins & Themes is in need of a major overhaul and some serious love. We have many categories within it that are out of date, for programs that aren't even in existence anymore!! To add to the pain, there are obviously categories that need to be created that we haven't yet, mostly because navigating through it has caused more than one person to throw up their hands in surrender and curl into the fetal position

.

This is where we need your help! The category has conquered many of our best and bravest, some whom have never been heard from again (don't worry, that won't be you

). Therefore, it's obvious that we need the help of a small army to take it on!!

The mission, should you accept, would be to take a trip through the vast Skins & Themes gallery and take note of any categories for out of date programs and/or categories that are missing and then leave those findings in the comments below.

Self-Promotion

Do you feel that your works deserve more attention from public but they are not as appreciated as they should? In this case self-promotion could be a solution. So, from now self-promotion is allowed. This means, that you can suggest as a DD your own submissions to devinatART. Do not forget to provide a few lines why you think that your work deserves a DD and do not send me just the links to your submissions.

Despite that I'm "checking" the gallery almost every day and watch a lot of customization groups, I may miss something really interesting and worth to be brought to the attention of the community at large. So, please, if you know the deviation which by your opinion deserves the DD, do not hesitate to suggest it.

Suggesting a DD is as simple as 1,2,3. You can find "mini how to" suggest a DD on my user-page.

Firefox 4.0 on Linux

Who knows how to replace the default "Bookmarks" icon in Firefox 4.0 on Linux? This icon drives me crazy, cause it's out of all styles and looks really ugly.

I couldn't find the path to it to replace it manually. Non of the icon-sets like "Faenza" or "elementary icons" can replace that icon automatically.

I'm not going to start “Pray for Japan” company here. But you can help by making a PSD file and uploading it to 365psd.com. They are collecting a set of design resources to raise money for the recovery efforts in Japan. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

Screenshots

From now I will not "fav" the screenshots without the credits/links to the used stuff/resources. These “ask me anything” and “enjoy” screenshots already got me.

Firefox 4.0 on Linux

Who knows how to replace the default “Bookmarks” icon in Firefox 4.0?

I couldn't find the path to it to replace it manually. Non of the current icon-sets like Faenza or elementary icons can replace that icon automatically.

Vector Colouring Book Project

`ChewedKandi has started an interesting project which involves making lineart, out of the vectors. Even in case if you don't use vectors to create your lineart and want to participate in the project, you can create a sketch that someone in the vector community can vector over into a lineart. Changes in S&T Gallery

Sole Images No Longer Possible In S&T Gallery

What does that mean? In short: it's no longer possible to submit only an image file (i.e. jpg or png) to any category inside the gallery of Skins & Themes, unless -and that's the important part- ...unless you have uploaded an archive (zip, rar, 7z etc.) or a supported skin file (rmskin, cskin etc.) to go with that image first.

What's positive in this? If we browse through all the various categories of that gallery, we would expect to find Skins and/or Themes, which we can download and apply to our desktops. What we do not expect are images and concept shots or even desktop screenshots. Not to mention the ever increasing amount of miscategorized photos, muro doodles or whatsoever.

This new restriction, of being no longer allowed to submit sole and mere image files to the gallery of Skins & Themes, is a great way to almost automatically avoid miscats from being submitted to the Skins & Themes gallery.

And there's another thing that's really good about it. You might have seen them before: those deviations that show an image and in the "Artist's Comments" there's a link to some dubious off-deviantART location, where you're supposed to download something, which isn't even sure that this will be the skin/theme you opted for.

What's with the older image-deviations? This restriction will have no influence on deviations that have already been submitted to the Skins & Themes gallery.

Linux Users on deviantART

Linux community on deviantART is not too big. Partially, this can be explained simply because Linux is not so widely used as Windows or Mac. But, at the same time, many Linux customizers prefer specific Linux dedicated customization sites like Gnome-Look.org over deviantART. It seems, that one of the reasons is that deviantART doesn't support the submissions in tar.gz and tar.bz2 archives which are essential for Linux.

The second reason is the not proper organizational structure of Linux and Unix Utilities category under the Skins & Themes gallery. I made a small poll on galleries structure and I'm really glad that already received some really interesting and useful suggestions on improvement. Hope for farther collaboration with you!

Skins & Themes GM (Linux Section)

Hello, my dear friends!

Maybe you already have noticed that the sign before my name has changed from = to ^. So, now “I'm wearing the hat”. Without farther explanations on how, when and why this happened, I'll guide you through some small but important topics.

First, let me explain some changes in the Skins & Themes gallery. From now, Skins & Themes gallery has two GMs – `OtisBee and me. While my friend `OtisBee will take care of all Windows/Apple related stuff, I'll take care of Linux related section.

So, whenever you'd experience any issues with Skins & Themes gallery, or would like some support, or would like to know about the appropriate category for your deviation, or have any other questions and suggestions that are in any way related to the subject of Skins & Themes, then please, apply:

- to `OtisBee on Windows/Apple Skins & Themes gallery related issues.
- to me on Linux Skins & Themes gallery related issues.

...and finally, in case if you have any general type question related to the Skins & Themes gallery you may apply to one of us by your desire.

Suggest a Daily Deviation

· I will only take DD suggestions for Linux section of Skins & Themes gallery.
· Send me a note that's titled as “DD Suggestion”.
· Include only 1 suggestion per note.
· Please, add a few sentences as to why you think the deviation should be brought to the attention of the community at large.
· Do not forget to add a link (URL) and/or thumbcode (preferable) to your note.

Do you know the history of this song? Here's what I've found in the net - "One of the most famous American Christmas songs, was originally written for Thanksgiving! The author and composer of Jingle Bells was a school principal called James Pierpoint who composed the song in 1857 for children celebrating his Boston Sunday School Thanksgiving. The song was so popular that it was repeated at Christmas, and indeed Jingle Bells has been reprised ever since."

More Transparency On Our Gallery Categories!

`OtisBee has started a journal, in which he listed all categories and subcategories the "Skins & Themes" section offers! Now why would he do such a thing? His goal is to offer information about the subcategories, by mouseover the entries. A descriptive text appears and tells us what is behind each application. That's very nice idea!

But, as you can imagine, it would take ages for 1 person, to work this out. But, hey! We are a community! So, we should offer any help we can! "How?" - By sending him a descriptive text for an entry which isn't displayed bold already.

"Anything else?" - Yup! He spends 10 points for every entry submitted by you! So, hurry up and visit `OtisBee's journal right now!

Desktop Screenshots

By my opinion, the main purpose of the desktop screenshot is to show your customization skills and help other persons to customize their desktops in the same manner. But, in most cases, I see the screenshots with such comments –“Enjoy!” or “Have fun!”, without any credits/links to the used original stuff. Can someone explain me what should I “enjoy” in this case?

I'm not against the desktop screenshots at all! But, they should meet some simple requirements. Let me show you the examples of some really wonderful works. Sure, there are some really great customizers specialized on desktop screenshots, but this time I recommend you to visit *karmat111's gallery. Her desktop screenshots are just brilliant! Besides the state of the art customization skills and the demonstration of the personal creative abilities her works help you to customize your desktops exactly as it’s shown at the shots by providing the links to all of the used resources!
